Firefox 5 Supports Multiple Platform Do not Track Feature

Wednesday, June 22nd, 2011

It was only two months ago that Mozilla released Firefox4, one of the most successful browser releases that received over two hundred million downloads. Following the success of Firefox 4, Mozilla had announced and implemented a new production cycle to accommodate a rapid product release environment. The new production has enabled Mozilla to quickly develop and test new products which have led to them being able to offer a new version of Firefox only months later. As described in the Mozilla Blog, the new release is the first browser to support a Do Not Track privacy feature on multiple platforms.

Mozilla first announced its new Rapid Release Development Cycle back in April. The previous production cycle contained three channels which included “Nightly Testing Builds”, “Firefox Beta”, and “Firefox Final Release”. The new development process introduced “ Aurora”. Aurora allows users to test new features and concepts that are more refined than those in the Nightly testing and less polished than the ones available in Beta testing. For a full description on the Mozilla constructing, testing, and release process visit the Mozilla Development Center. The new cycle has enabled Mozilla to test their feature and execute a faster product delivery for their customers. The two months it has taken Mozilla to develop Firefox5 are a drastic difference compared to the two years it took to deliver Firefox 4 to the public.

According to Mozilla “The latest version of Firefox includes more than 1,000 improvements and performance enhancements that make it easier to discover and use all of the innovative features in Firefox. This release adds support for modern Web technologies that make it easier for developers to build amazing Firefox Add-ons, Web applications and websites.”

Visually the new version and Firefox4 display no differences however the recent release now offers support for CSS animations, Do Not Track preferences, improved canvas and JavaScript support, better tuned HTTP idle… Read the rest

Using Google´s New Site Filtering for Better Search Results

Wednesday, March 16th, 2011

Google’s Blog recently announced a new method for customizing their user’s search experience, which will be available soon.

google filtering Using Google´s New Site Filtering for Better Search Results

March 15, 2011 from http://googleblog.blogspot.com

Recognizing that the search results they provide may not be a perfect match, Google is now providing a search site-filter. Initially, Google released this feature as a part of their Google Chrome web browser in January 2011.  Seeing that about 15% of Internet users browse using Google Chrome, Google recognized the benefit of offering this feature in their search engine in addition to Google Chrome (see Chrome market share).

Providing this personalized site-filtering feature enables users to avoid unrelated information and block undesirable websites from appearing in their search results. Whether it is because the website is offensive, low quality, or if a customer just doesn’t like it, they now have the option to exclude it from their search results.  This feature is now available for people using Google Chrome version 9+, Internet Explorer 8+, and Firefox versions 3.5+ Internet browsers.

Search Results

Although this feature provides customers with a better search experience, could this be used to determine the future rank of a website? In their blog, Google states that they may eventually evaluate and use the data from this feature as a signal for ranking.  Presently they are only attempting to offer customers an easy and more controlled search tool.

How It Will Work

When using a compatible browser the person performing the search will notice a “Block all example.com website results” next to the “cached” and “similar” links.  These links are located next to the websites URL following the description. After receiving a confirmation request to block the site the results will be hidden until the user decides to deactivate the block.  Once blocked, if the search results contain a blocked website a message is then displayed to the user stating some of the results have… Read the rest

Content Diversity is the Key to Captivating Visitors

Friday, October 22nd, 2010

images text audio video Content Diversity is the Key to Captivating VisitorsHello there! Welcome to the Internet Beacon’s awesome weblog. If you’re here for SEO tips for small businesses, you’ve come to the right place.

Keeping people coming to your site is key in this industry. You don’t want them to visit once and then forget about you. That doesn’t do you any favors and it keeps your website from gaining influence on the web. Now, Search Engine Optimization (SEO), is something we here at the Internet Beacon specialize in. However, once you get people to your site, you need to give them a reason to keep coming back. Now, this where your content comes into play. The only thing is, don’t let your content get stale. There are three major forms of communication used today in the blogosphere.

Audio – Listen Up

Today’s Internet user is doing multiple things at once. They might be shopping while listening to the news. Or checking their bank account while playing their favorite music. The common thread here is that the audio provides the user with content, without demanding their absolute attention. Providing content like podcasts or even streaming sound clips can get your audience’s interest, while still giving them freedom.

Video – Catch their Eye

Now, if you really want someone’s attention, video is a great way to do it. Video allows for massive amounts of data to be exchanged. The combination of audible and visual means creates an opportunity to share tons of information with your users. Some great video ideas are reviews or answers to popular questions about your products/services.

Written Word – Worth “X” Amount of Pictures

Ah, the classic standby. Text was the first form of communication on the Web and is easiest to post. A solid blog or post can inform users of your products and services, all while representing it an easy to handle format. PC processing power doesn’t come into play and text is easily managed on mobile devices as well.

Step Aside Web 2.0. Here Comes Web 3.0

Friday, October 8th, 2010

web 2.0 web 3.0 Step Aside Web 2.0. Here Comes Web 3.0Hello there! Welcome to the Internet Beacon’s awesome weblog. If you’re here for SEO tips for small businesses, you’ve come to the right place.

Ah, the World Wide Web. It’s come a long way from AOL and Geocities blogs with looping MIDI music. We have social networking sites that keep us in touch with friends, family, coworkers, and even complete strangers. We can post what music we’re listening to and others can stream the same song. Now, as the Web has grown, a sort of version number has been attached to it.

At first, there was the World Wide Web, or Web 1.0. It consisted of a lot of static web pages serving identical information to all visitors. There was very little customization and user interaction.

Now, after a while, developers started making sites that would display dynamic content. Once we reached a point where there could live interaction with the Web, Web 2.0 was born.

Well, there is a new kid in town named Web 3.0. Now, before you get in an uproar about how much you love Web 2.0, let me explain a little about it. Web 3.0 is described as a persistent experience online that removes the borders between the Web and us by obviating the need to sit at a terminal or handheld device. Devices that provide things like Augmented Reality, adding computer generated data as an overlay to the real world, will be part of this. Imagine seeing directions through your glasses instead of a GPS. Devices that interact with real time data, say, where you’re eating lunch at the moment, will also be a part.

Web 3.0 is still in its infancy and should by no means be taken as an apocalyptic end to life as we know it. We don’t have to worry about being left in the dust of society unless we “plug in”. That sort of dystopian future is best left to Science Fiction.

HTML5 and Adobe Flash Clash Over the Future of the Web

Friday, September 17th, 2010

Hello and welcome to the Internet Beacon! We’re an SEO firm in Maryland.

Apple and Adobe‘s feud has been appearing in the press more and more lately. These two industry giants are poised to start one of the next great IT wars. If you don’t know what’s going on, let me explain. Apple is pushing for HTML5, the open standard for the Web to be ratified by the W3C, the body that governs Internet coding standards, to be the way coders create exciting new content. Adobe, owners of Flash, among other things, are arguing that Flash is integral to the Web and Apple needs to build its devices to work with it. Here are some arguments for both sides:

HTML5

HTML5 will be the standard in approximately 2012, when it is ratified by the W3C. Pages are currently coded in a mix of many languages with a myriad of plug-ins. Proponents of HTML5 are arguing that it will be able to deliver all that we use now, but with one single language. This will make coding easier and require less powerful machines. This all sounds great. However, there is a downside. Programmers who have built their careers using plug-ins like Adobe Flash will have to learn a whole new language if they want to stay employed and relevant.  This could create a crisis for web design.

Apple is arguing that since this will be the adopted standard, that it is time to set aside plug-ins and use a unified language.

Adobe Flash

Flash has been the “go to” for creating powerful and creative web content for years now. Taking many forms over the years, Flash has definitely woven it’s way into the fabric of the Web. From simple navigation tools to graphically stunning games and media, Flash is what developers use.  The only downside to this is that these programs demand more and more as they grow. Additional bandwidth and more powerful machines are required to experience these items. Think of someone with… Read the rest
